• New lines of Perilla frutescens were obtained from the progenies of crosses between local varieties of the perillaldehyde type. Three of the lines had higher essential oil contents and deeper reddish purple leaves than either of the parents. One of these lines, EL, is very late flowering, and its leaves have an increased anthocyanin content after mid-September.
