A new principle toxic component, lyoniatoxin C_<22>H_<34>O_7 (I), colorless prism, m. p. 243° (dec.), [α]^<26>_D-30.8 (C=0.4413, in MeOH) was obtained from the leaves of Lyonia ovalifolia SIEB. et ZUCC. var. elliptica HAND.-MAZZ. (Ericaceae). The extraction was thereby carried out by successive checking of the toxicity of the extractive at each stage. (I) gave no acetate by usual method nor any oxidation product by CrO_3 in pyridine. Hydrolysis of (I) gave deacetyllyoniatoxin (II), m. p. 258° which was reconverted to (I) by usual acetylation and four hydroxyl groups were found to be included in (I) by Zerewitinoff's determination of active hydrogen. From the fact that periodic acid (III) treatment of (II) resulted in consumption of one mole of (III) while (I) was not affected by (III), hydroxyl and acetyl groups were located at adjacent positions of (I). Tentative partial structure for (I) was proposed as [numerical formula]
