A report is given of the results of observation by a method using the palisade ratio for the purpose of discriminations of the Japanese drugs consist of leaves and the powders. Some palisade ratios were determined at the base, centre, margin and apex of the leaves and also on the total average value in each leaf of various species of different plants. The average numbers of a single leaf were obtained as follows: Swertia japonica 6.6 S. chinensis 6.0 S. tosaensis 4.0 (Table 1); Digitalis purpurea 4.9 D.lanata 3.7 D. lutea 4.9 (Table 3); Datura Tatula 6.2 D. Stramonium 6.2 D. alba 5.5(Table 4); Plectranthus japonicus 5.6 P.trichocarpus 7.8 P. excisus 6.0 P.influexus 9.2 (Table5); Atropa Belladonna 59; Scopolia japonica 5.0 (Table6); Geranium nepalense 3.8 G.japonicum 4.2 G,eriostemon var. Reinii 4.1; Ranunculus acris var. japonica f. vulgaris 6.0; Anemone flaccida 9.2 (Table 7); and the ones of each sepal of three Swertia species, S.japonica, S.chinensis and S,tosaensis were respectivdy 5.3, 4,2 and 3.7. From the results so far obtained in this study, it came to the following conclusion: The important difference between the average numbers shown by this ratio could not found among different mature stem-leaves within a species and also it does not varied with the habitat, in which the same plant was grown. It is showed that for a particular species, the palisade ratio has the constant value which often may be employed to distinguish between the leaves of two different species and this method is very available for the samples of drug which consist of leaves or its powders.
