In this research, we proposed a rate adaptation method in multi hop ad hoc network based on RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) as a link quality parameter. We combine the rate adaptation scheme with the AODV (Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector) routing protocol. The RREQ (Route Request) packet that is sent by the source node will be used to determine the Received Signal Strength (RSS) of the transmission signal. The minimum RSS value will be sent to the source node by using RREP (Route Reply) packet. Based on the RSS value in RREP, the source node will determine the data rate for sending data to destination node. In this research, we used IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN standard, so there are eight data rates between 6Mbps to 54Mbps that is possible to be selected. Since the wireless links in ad hoc network are not completely reliable, the routing metric uses the link quality information (RSSI) for choosing the most reliable route. Source node will choose the path between source and destination that offers the highest value of RSSI compared with the other paths. In this study, the performance of proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation. Performance metrics are delivery ratio and throughput. Consequently, simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
