It is essential for students of the National College of Maritime Technology to pass the writtenexamination for the second grade maritime officer's COC (certificate of competency) in order tosecure employment from major oceangoing shipping companies. Among subjects of the writtenexam, has English been regarded as a difficult one because no systematic way of preparing for thesubject has been established. For most students, common way of studying is simply translating pastexam questions.This paper will present an approach using corpus analyses for improving effectiveness in learningEnglish for maritime officer's COC. Two programs are used to analyze the corpus; one analyzes atarget word in terms of range and frequency of the word, the other analyzes a target word in context.Lists of the most frequently used vocabulary will be presented. Furthermore, the most frequentlyused word patterns will be exemplified.
