This paper examines the Takashi Nagai's remarks on using atomic energy. Though he was among thevictims of the atomic bombing on Nagasaki, he recommended using atomic energy for peace, as he was anexpert in radiology. He was actually the first advocate for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, preceding U.S.President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who delivered the speech "Atoms for Peace" to the UN General Assemblyon December 8, 1953. Nagai's support for using atomic energy seems fitting considering the nuclear policy ofWashington and Tokyo at that time. That might be one of the reasons that "The Bells of Nagasaki," his mostimportant work, was given permission by the GHQ/SCAP to be published, and that he was praised by theJapanese government which planned on using nuclear energy in future.
