Since the techniques of the forehand volley in tennis are often instructed rather expediently in spite of the fact that it is one of the most difficult strokes, it is necessary to develop systematic ways of instruction. For this purpose, this study analyzed the basic forehand volley motion of an athletic player in detail with VICON-MX and made the kinematics of the forehand volley clear. In analyzing the motion, the target line and the ball-feeding line were set in the Y-axis of the space coordinates to capture Kinematic characteristics of the center of gravity in the player's motion and racket's movement exactly. The results of this study are : 1) the whole characteristics of the player's motion can be explained depending on the X-component, Y-component, and Z-component of the player's center of gravity, while those of the racket's movement can be explained depending of the X-component, Y-component, and Z-component of the racket's center of gravity. 2) Two fundamental phases are observed in the phenomena of the forehand volley stroke : `Pre-Impact' phase from `Ready Position' to 'Impact', and `Post-Impact' phase from `Impact' to `Right Toe Contact.' 3) The player's motion has a characteristic of closing in the Y-axis first and then moving forward before `Impact', and the racket's movement has a characteristic of being stationary on the frontal plane before `Impact' and then moving forward prominently at `Impact.'
