In Japan, we have been seeing many social changes influence women's lives. In spite of these changes in education, law, family and employment, traditional women's roles which prescribe their place as at home still remain strong. Even though more and more women enter the paid labor force, they often have to give up their jobs when they have children. Women who may work outside their home, or have to work for solely financial reasons are expected to do so without disturbing their roles at home as wife and mother. Their social roles outside their homes are secondary. Role reversal is not the answer to these problems. Nor will extension of social roles for women as workers outside their homes be effective without changes in basic male-female sex roles. We need to restructure the frame of reference for sex roles which divide men's from women's sphere. We may sometimes see women who pursue a career also play the traditional women's roles at home. Not only women's roles in the workplace, but also her roles at home need to be changed. Unlike other social changes,it may be more difficult to bring about change at home because it requires the personal changes of both men and women. Equality of men and women should be measured by the relation with a partner and by the sharing of housework. Now there are psychological problems which some housewives are facing: neurosis, alcoholism, or the empty-nest syndrome, for example. These problems can not only be attributed to their personal weakness, but to the continued emphasis on traditional sex roles and the production-oriented society which enforces them. We have to realize what we, both men and women, pay for sustaining traditional sex roles and the need for restructuring them.
