Potent Antioxidative Activity of Unripe Fruits of Garcinia mangostana L.

The antioxidative activities of the EtOH extracts and the fractions of the extracts from the unripe fruits and ripe fruit hulls of Garcinia mangostana L., including H2O-soluble and H_2O-insoluble fractions, were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical photometric assay. Among the tested samples, the EtOH extract and H_2O-soluble fraction from the unripe fruits exhibited potent antioxidative activity with EC_<50> values of 5.13 and 4.73 μg/ml, respectively. The further purified fraction of the H_2O-soluble fraction of the unripe fruits possessed the highest activity with an EC_<50> value of 3.60 μg/ml. The major antioxidative constituent in the H_2O-soluble fraction of the unripe fruits was identified as (-)-epicatechin by the HPLC method, and the quantitative analyses showed that the (-)-epicatechin content in this fraction was approximately three times higher than that in the H_2O-soluble fraction from ripe fruit hulls, resulting in a potent antioxidative activity in the unripe fruits. These results suggest that the unripe fruits can be used as a prospective natural resource when searching for antioxidative agents.
