Pharmacognostical study of Japanese drug 'Nan-Shikon', root of Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Johnston growing in India

The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical study of the root of A. euchroma, i.e. 'Nan-Shikon' or Indian 'Ratanjot', (Family-Boraginaceae), collected in the country-Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The botanical and physico-chemical parameters of both samples were quite similar though variations were observed in the number of vessels per unit area and percentage of arnebins. The present study revealed that the root and root-bark readily exfoliate in the form of papery dark shining or dull purple layers; the vessels arrangement is diffused porous; exfoliate bark consists of three types of suberized parenchymatous cells i.e. (i) elongated, tapering cells (ii) polygonal somewhat rounded cells with reddish brown contents and (iii) angular cells with or without coloured contents along with some vessels; nine naphthaquinones. β,β-dimethylacryl alkannin (arnebin-1), β,β-dimethylacrylshikonin (isoarnebin-1), acetylalkannin (amebin-3), alkannin (arnebin-4), shikonin (isoarnebin-4), deoxyshikonin (arnebin-7), β,β-dimethylacrylhydroxyalkannin (arnebin-2), hydroxyalkannan (arnebin-5) and acetyl hydroxy alkannin (arnebin-6) are present in its hexane extract.
