• This paper reports on a teaching practice which attempts to help junior high school students develop their spontaneous speaking ability of English, especially in the first half of the three-year course of junior high school. The goal of the practice is for the students to be able to express themselves in English by making the most of their knowledge. In order to reach this goal, the practice encourages the students to learn from what they want to but cannot express in the activities, rather than providing them with expressions to be learned. Students' responses to the practice and changes observed in their performances are also reported.
