Wireless networks are typically assumed to be used with omni-antennas. Transmissions among neighboring nodes in wireless networks may interfere with each other using omni-antennas. To overcome this problem, MAC protocols using smart antennas have been proposed. Most studies evaluate the performance of transmission with smart antennas by simulations. This paper evaluates the throughput performance of transmission with smart antennas in directional beamform, omni-directional beamform and different transmission power based on the UNAGI/ESPAR. The evaluations include experiments with different topologies. As a result, we find that transmission of the smart antennas with directional beam has higher throughput than that with the omni-directional beam for all these topologies.
