As George Woodcock points out, "The work of Orwell's, considered as a whole, is a good deal more complex than it appears at first, for many problems posed by his life and work remain unsolved", he has many phases, such as the novelist Orwell, the critic Orwell and the socialist Orwell. His essential nature, however, seems to be different from that of any other ordinary intellectual person, whose advocating principle or theory is based on his scholastic accomplishments. His is based on his actual experience. So the experience occupies the core of his principle. Out of all his experiences, the one in Burma was the most fundamental and affecting to his personality, because he began to lead his real life as a literary man after the bitter and suffering experience he had had while serving there in the Indian Imperial Police for five years. In this paper we tried to examine this novel, Burmese Days as well as Orwell's personality at that time in relation to his later writings. Therefore, this study also dealt with the theme, structure, and imagery found in this novel in order to clarify some complexity and principles that underlie this story.
