This novel was published in 1935 when George Orwell, its author was thirty-two years old. It followed the publication of Burmese Days (1934) and was the third book if counted from the first, Down and Out in Paris and London (1933). But it has been called his second novel because the first was a sort of reportage. Of all his works this novel has suffered the severest criticism. The chief reasons for such critical remarks lie in the following: its so-called documentary interpolations, its episodic structure, the acceptance of the world as it is and the denial of one's self before the demands of society, revealing an attitude which will be finally contradicted by Orwel himself. In spite of these defects, I esteem this book, for it seems to contain a lot of important materials, giving us a clearer perspective of his literature. In this paper I have made an inquiry into its theme and the subsequent problems, hoping to clarify some complexity underlying this novel.
