The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between the reaction to music ofmentally disabled subjects and their communication skills, and to derive a method of treatment for them. The subjects were from a vocational aid center for people with disabilities. Their parents were surveyed by questionnaire regarding the subjects’ interest in and reaction to music. The results were analyzed as follows. Factor analysis: Three factors were elected: “mindfulness toward music” “attunement with language” and “body movement”. Comparison between the three factors and communications skills: “mindfulness toward music”and “attunement with language” were directly proportional to the level of communication skills. On the other hand, the subjects having lower communication skills scored higher in “body movement.” The survey results appear to indicate that “body movement” may be a key word in music therapyfor persons with limited communication skills.
