Liquid hydrocarbon fuel, such as kerosene is promising energy source of fuel cells owing to their high energy density, easy handling and so on, although sulfur compounds in commercial kerosene are very refractory. Various types of sorbents have been studied for adsorptive desulfurization of kerosene for fuel cell system. Ni type sorbent, activated carbon type sorbent and solid acid type sorbent are explained. Especially solid acid type sorbent has high performance on adsorptive desulfurization of thiophene type and benzothiophene type sulfur compounds. A life time of cascade adsorptive desulfurization, using activated carbon type sorbent and solid acid type sorbent in series, of commercial kerosene was evaluated. Although the kerosene involved refractory sulfur compounds such as alkyldibenzothiophenes, sulfur content of treated kerosene continued below 20 ppb for more than 2,000 hours without using hydrogen at ambient temperature.
