英語授業における教師の依頼表現の直接性について

The aim of this study is to analyze how three English teachers, who are native speakers, make polite requests throughout the communication classes conducted in the first and third year at a Japanese university. In doing so, not only did we try to verify whether or not their polite requests reflect the features of implicit cultural values that English language has, but also to reveal the features of speech made by the individual teachers. To analyze these features within the classes, we adopted "The Typology of Directness Speech Acts" (Falsgraf, 1994). The results of this analysis showed some interesting points. First, it became clear that two out of the three teachers apt to avoid making direct requests, as well as to use such strategy as negative politeness in their speeches. However, one teacher does not show such a tendency. Furthermore, in the analysis of how the teachers' polite requests may change depending on the year's difference, two of them do not show much of a significant difference between the two classes, whereas one teacher is likely to make a number of direct polite requests in the 1st year-class and indirect polite requests in the 3rd year-class. Considering these results, it became clear that the implicit cultural values of English usage are reflected in the teachers' speeches to some extent within the classes; however, it turned out that this implication does not necessarily apply to all native speaking teachers.
