In the New Course of Study in English Education (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 2008), to develop communicative competence is one of the most important goals in Japanese junior and senior high school English educations. It is for this reason that future teachers must acquire the skills to teach communicative English lessons. However, the consensus of communication-oriented lessons has not been discussed enough by teachers, so each teacher has a different view of communicative lessons based on their own experiences. Frolich, Spada and Allen (1985) developed the COLT (Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching) observation scheme to analyze communicative orientation in language classrooms and cross-interaction between teachers and students. This paper examines how communication oriented lessons are conducted in four different demonstration lessons which are taught by student teachers and analyzed by COLT. The result shows that each lesson has different characteristics in view of communicative orientations. This paper also proposes the improvements to these lessons in how to become more effective.
