• This paper discusses the distribution of Shinto shrines in Kagawa Prefecture. There is a general tendency that shrines connected with the Itsukushima, Sumiyoshi, Yashaka, Kasuga, Hie and Matuo Shrines are distributed along the coast or river. The influence of these shrines does not reach the mountainous areas in the south of the prefecture. No shrines connected with these six shrines are found in the mountainous areas leading to the passes of the Asan Mountains. There is no distribution of shrines from east to west along what used to be called Nankaido. Shrines connected with the Sumiyoshi Shrine are distributed along the river into the inland area. This implies that traffic along the river was a main stream in the past.
