Japanese society is rapidly ageing as a result of a continuously low birth rate and an increasingly longer life expectancy. As the elderly population grows, the proportion of youth shrinks, and the population dwindles, the nation is predicted to face many challenges such as healthcare costs, labor shortages, and decreased productivity. How did the Japanese population become so old so quickly? This article addresses some of the socioeconomic factors which may have contributed to the present trends of low fertility and rapid population ageing.
