The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of two types of training: a phoneme segmentation task and a CALL based sound-to-spelling task. These two types of training for false beginners, low proficiency adults at university, are based on the results of previous experiments of oral reading and dictation of single words. The data collected from students ranging from seventh grade to university showed that automaticity of single word processing is a prerequisite for Japanese EFL learners to pass smoothly from the beginner to intermediate level of L2 development. In the present paper, we will discuss the following points: (1) how we modified the first training, and (2) how false beginners can successfully learn the spelling of English words using a CALL based task.
