This paper outlines techniques for using film in EFL and intercultural communication contexts. In doing so, the study will offer suggestions to help learners proceed in an analytic examination, comparison, and understanding of aspects of both their own culture and that of the target culture. The focus of the study will be on cross-cultural situations afforded in selected films and documentaries. While it is often the case that films overly distort cultural representations, exaggerating cultural ignorance for dramatic effect, it is possible to use these representations as effective audio-visual resources for helping learners better understand key aspects of intercultural communication study. Use of film in this way also helps to build in students a greater predisposition toward critical thinking and analysis. This paper will consider some basic principles behind the use of film in EFL/IC contexts, present practical examples of films appropriate for these contexts and detail teaching strategies for using them in class.
