This study investigated language and metacognitive abilities that contribute to the English listening ability of Japanese high school EFL learners, and also clarified the important differences between good listeners and low-level listeners. The participants were given nine language tests and questionnaires for listening tests in English and Japanese, and the data were analyzed by a factor analysis and a multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the most important factor to explain high school students' English listening ability was the ability of English word aural recognition. Comparing good listeners and low-level listeners, it was found out that good listeners made more use of matacognitive ability, while low-level listeners depended on their English language abilities. As a pedagogical implication for low-level listeners, a training to improve their ability of aural recognition of English words is recommended.
