The problem of university entrance examinations and English language teaching in Japan has been a major issue for a long time. It has been generally accepted that the university entrance examinations, apart from the first stage National Center Entrance Examination, are beyond the level of the senior high school courses of study. Although the discrepancy between the difficulty level of university entrance examinations and senior high school courses of study has been pointed out, it has rarely been supported by empirical data. The focus of this paper is to discuss the differences between the English test of university entrance examinations and high school textbooks based on statistical data obtained. This paper includes a study of the comparison of the vocabulary between high school textbooks and the university entrance examinations. Analysis is performed by using computerized statistical programs. The results of the study show that the university entrance examinees will encounter a large portion of words that they have never encountered in high school textbooks.
