This study compared holistic scoring with analytic scoring for oral interview tests. It attempted to examine the correlation between holistic scoring and analytic scoring in order to determine if a holistic scoring technique is as reliable as an analytic scoring technique and to verify the inter- and intra-rater reliability in testing oral interviews. In this experiment, oral interview tests were administered to 36 Japanese high school students. Then, the video-recorded interview tests were rated by ten examiners who have varying levels of experience teaching English as a foreign language at high school level. Statistical analysis showed that the markings obtained from holistic scoring were moderately similar to those from analytic scoring. It also showed quite high intra-rater reliability in scoring. The study concluded that both holistic and analytic scorings were highly reliable methods for scoring oral interview tests.
