The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance of junior high school students in a test for recognition of function-chain (the second speaker's response to the first speaker's utterance) and from the data produce suggestions for creating systematic speaking skills programmes. First, the author applied factor analysis to the result of the test and extracted the three factors which best explained the features of the communication patterns. The author then interpreted these three factors based on their factor loadings. Next, Hayashi's quantification model III was used to analyze the structure of the communication patterns and two dimensions were obtained. The author interpreted the features of the two dimensions based on the category score of each communication pattern. Thus factor analysis and Hayashi's quantification model III together provided information about the structures and relations between variables in the form of test items and facilitated an understanding of the features of each communication pattern.
