This study investigated the effects of text mapping on reading strategies in order to identify the relationship between reading tasks and reading strategies. The experiment compared two tasks, text mapping and translating, as to the strategies used by the readers and examined differences in the strategies used by readers given the same task. Japanese university students were the subjects and experimental procedure was think-aloud. The results of the experiment provided valuable information about the effects of text mapping. When students read with text mapping, they recognize the relationships between the elements in the text, organize that information and categorize it. Readers do this better with a text mapping task than when they are given a translating task. In addition, the results indicated that there were some differences in the ways of rereading in text mapping and translating.
