The aim of this paper is twofold: pedagogical and theoretical. Within a cognitively conceived theoretical framework, the paper proposes the teaching of the passive voice without recourse to the active voice. In the first part of the paper, the framework is given as a rationale for the pedagogical proposal based on a generalized model of the relationship between grammatical knowledge and its use. Referring to the model, it is claimed that the traditional way of teaching the passive by way of its active counterpart is not only methodologically inefficient but cognitively invalid. In the last part of the paper, we introduce how the passive voice has been taught in Japanese junior high schools by providing the results of a survey on teachers' practices and government authorized textbooks. Finally, we report on a classroom procedure at a junior high school where teaching the passive voice 'directly' was conducted.
