This paper examines both linguistic and rhetorical features of Japanese college students' persuasive writing in order to identify differences between skilled writers and less skilled writers. Students are divided into three groups of different levels (high, intermediate, and low) based on the scores of the cloze tests, and their essays are analyzed from both a linguistic and rhetorical approach which includes 10 linguistic and 4 rhetorical variables. The results indicate that skilled writers used more clauses per sentence and more subordination, while less skilled writers used more simple sentences and more coordination. In addition, advanced writers showed more effective use of parallel and extended parallel progressions than less skilled writers, which proves that good writers elaborate on a few arguments rather than introduce many different subtopics.
