In the dedications of two narrative poems -Venus and Adonis(1593) and The Rape of Lucrece(1594)- , metaphors and imageries are abundant to help further in understanding who was the possible dedicatee of William Shakespeare's Sonnets(1609). In this article, of all the candidates represented as a "Fair Youth," the most convincing is Sir Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton. For Shakespeare apparently dedicated his two early narrative poems to this young aristocrat for his noble patronage in the 1590s. Considering an intimate relationship between Shakespeare the poet and his patron foregrounded in the dedications of two preceding poems may help us find a possible interpretation of the first "procreation" sonnet sequence in The Sonnets.
