We evaluated the effects of an exercise history on the bone mineral density (BMD) of Japanese females with a low birth weight. The subjects consisted of 14 females (age, 20.1±0.7 years) with a low birth weight (from 1.5 to <2.5kg) and 19 (age, 20.4±0.7) with a standard birth weight (≧2.5kg). They were classified according to a low/standard birth weight and the presence/absence of exercise habits in college into groups with a low birth weight and exercise habits (Group LE) and standard birth weight and exercise habits (Group SE), and groups with a low birth weight and no exercise habits (Group LN) and standard birth weight and no exercise habits (Group SN) as their respective control groups. In addition, multiple regression analysis was performed using an exercise history in elementary, junior high, as well as high school and the birth weight as explanatory variables and the BMD as a criterion variable. The body composition was analyzed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The body fat percentage was significantly higher (p<0.05) for low birth weight (32.5±7.0%) than for standard birth weight (27.9±4.6%). The BMD of the femoral neck, Ward's triangle, as well as greater trochanter, and the total BMD were higher in Group SE than in Group SN (p<0.05). The BMD of the greater trochanter was 0.141g/cm^2 lower for "standard birth weight" with "no exercise habits" during the junior high school period, and 0.054g/cm^2 lower for "low birth weight" with "no exercise habits" during this period, showing an interaction (p<0.05). These results showed that the body fat percentage increases in Japanese females with a low birth weight, but exercise during youth increases the BMD at the central end of the femur, a frequent site of fracture associated with osteoporosis.
