MIYAMOTO, S. and ISHIKO, T., Is the Body Compositin Formula of Brozek et al. Applicable to Female Athletes Who Have Agility and Speed? Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.10, No.2 pp.37-41, 2004. The aim of this study was to examine the validity of the body composition formula of Brozel et al., using the concept of the "reference man" to which "obesity tissue" is added or subtracted, when applied to female athletes with agility and speed. The subjects of the study were female athletcs: 10 in the "female athlete refernce body group" (percentage of body fat 16±3%), 10 in the high fat athlete group (more than 19% body fat) and 7 in the low fat athlete group (less than 13% body fat). Body composition was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. To the equation used in this research was applied the concept of "female athlete reference body froup" (body fat 16.2%, bone mineral content 5.0%, body density 1.064 kg/l) and "female athlete obesity tissue" (fat 58.1%, bone mineral content 1.9%, density 0.972 kg/l), and we derived the following body composition formula: % body fat=4.710/ body density-4.265. In comparison, the formula of Brozek et al. was: % body fat=4.570 / body density-4.142. Because a signififcant relationship was found between these two formulas, we concluded that the body composition formula of Brozek et al. is applicable to the case of ffemale athletes with agility and speed.
