This is the first of the five essays that will trace the transformation of F. S. Fitzgerald's writing method or pattern chronologically through his five novels -This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, Tender Is the Night and The Last Tycoon. The transformation will be mainly examined in terms of his use of "moment," "double vision," and his idea about "morality." It may be safely said that Fitzgerald is one of those writers who always considers the effect of that single moment of aliveness which James Joyce would call epiphany. The aim of this essay is to scrutinize his moment and writing pattern in his first novel This Side of Paradise that contains almost all prototypes of his description of love between men and women, one of his main motifs. This Side of Paradise shows his literary ability to transform transient excitement and intoxication into the various crucial moments, such as "ambivalent moment," "ironical moment," "glorious moment," and "lyrical moment."
