The development of real-world listening proficiency seems to be of growing importance to Japanese students. The language lab of the past, as well as many LLs today, however, concentrated too much on sounds and words in isolation bearing no context at all. A closer look at the nature of speech perception and a deeper insight into the difficulties of Japanese students, discussed in this article, will help to clarify how to develop practical listening proficiency. We also take a brief look at the lab of the future, with some suggestions on listening, speaking, pedagogic, and how to rearrange your lab to make it more versatile.
