In LL education I believe that in its functions it can be divided into four stages: passive, active, comparative and creative. By the "passive" stage I mean the method of developing only the student's hearing ability, that is, that of trying to make him grasp the sounds of a foreign language quite different from those of Japanese. By the "active" stage I mean the method of making the student mainly carry out his speaking drill in his own voice by means of the practice of "hearing+repetition (in speaking)". In the "Comparative" stage, the learner is required to make a point of comparing model reading with his own reading in the process of "hearing+repetition (speaking voice-recording) +comparison". By the "Creative" stage is meant the development of his ability to express himself actively. It ranges from mutual conversation (questions and answers) to varied ways of expressing in speech what he thinks and feels. Literally it means the stage of developing his creative ability. Now let us consider how a "Creative Response" should be in each of these four kinds of drills. (I) Creative Hearing In hearing a student is required to develop (1) his ability to catch the point of an argument and (2) his ability to connect one point with others. He is trained to grasp the meaning actively, not passively, and at the same time to summarize its content. (II) Creative Speaking In expressing his thought, the student is required to develop (1) his ability to express it as the occasion demands and (2) his ability to narrate it smoothly. By cultivating both these abilities he is enabled to acquire smartness and liveliness in his speech and adapt his speech to any circumstances. (III) Creative Reading The instructor should take care to develop (1) the student's ability for rapid reading and (2) his ability to grasp the meaning by asking him to read loud. Moreover, the instructor should accelerate his reading ability by combining (1) and (2) and thereby develop his ability to summarize efficiently what he has read. (IV) Creative Writing For the learner to make his spelling correct, it is important to develop (1) his ability to take dictation accurately, and in order to express himself clearly on paper, (2) his ability to "create" or compose. What matters in (1) and (2) above, lies in the recording quality of letters and Chinese characters. It is to be hoped, therefore, that he should develop his ability for creative expression by trying to confirm the form and content of those records. Now let me go on to consider the above mentioned "Creative Responses" in relation to tape-recording. One must exert some ingenuity: (a) in sound-adjustment-long or short, high or low, and strong or weak-on the part of one who records, and in (b) how to manage the microphone-its position, distance and pitch-on the instructor's part. Moreover, I may safely say that it is of utmost importance for a student to get well acquainted with the ways of thinking and expression peculiar to a particular foreign country in order to master its "living language", of which so much is being discussed nowadays.
