To better understand how the occurrence of contact welding relates to the operation series arcing durations in consecutive make and break operations, the electrical endurance test was conducted with the commercial automotive relay, and the wave forms of make and break voltage between the electrodes were recorded with LabView. Experiments indicate welding may occur suddenly or randomly with the increase of operation number. A single or a few longer make or break duration is not certain to result in the contact welding, but a group of longer break or make arc durations within a certain range of operation can make the welding happen soon after (called "group longer arcing duration effect"). Welding may occur in both making and breaking operation, but the welding probability in making operation is much higher than in breaking operation.
