How to Present the Monitoring Data of Tributyltin Compounds (TBT) and trans-Chlordane in Sediment of Japan

Objectives: The Ministry of the Environment in Japan (MOE) has been monitoring the levels of persistent chemical residues in four mediums such as sediment, biota, atmosphere and water in Japan and publishing the result in an annual report entitled "The Chemicals in the Environment" since 1974 using the geometrical mean method as the representative levels of persistent chemical residures. We reevaluated the data on tributyltin compounds (TBT) and trans-chlordane, which were included in the same category as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), to clarify if different trend could be observed from different statistics of the measured results. Methods: The raw data of TBT and trans-chlordane in sediments of Japan from fiscal year 1988 to 2006 were collected for the "The Chemicals in the Environment". The reevaluation was conducted using 50 percentiles method, 90 percentiles method and the geometrical mean method as the method of calculating the raw data. Results: Analyzing the results of TBT monitoring, we noticed only small differences which were negligible. This means that the shapes of the TBT trends were very similar between the geometrical mean method and the 50 percentiles method. On the other hand, looking at the results for trans-chlordane, we found completely different trend shapes between the geometrical mean method and the 50 percentiles method. Conclusion: The 50 percentiles method makes another impression on the public as it more clearly indicates the trend of trans-chlordane found in sediment in Japan. The monitoring data have some limitations because of the small sample size. We would like to propose that not only the geometrical mean method but also the 50 percentiles method should be considered in calculating the raw data, especially in low sample size cases like the trans-chlordane case.
