• Communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) are key components of air traffic management (ATM), which is the dynamic, integrated management of air traffic and airspace. The modernization programs of the current ATM systems have been in progress mainly in Europe and the U.S. For the global ATM, the seamless services in collaboration with all parties are prerequisite. Therefore, global harmonization of the ATM systems may be necessary. A survey on the CNS systems currently used and planned for use mainly in Europe and the U.S. was conducted for planning research and development programs at ENRI. This paper briefly presents the results of the survey on the current status of communication and surveillance systems such as VHF data link (VDL), SSR Mode S and ADS-B. In addition, an overview of the information network called SWIM is provided.
