This study attemps to clarify how each family perceives and copes, exmines what makes family caregiver's perception change through the time, and how this changing effects coping pattern of family. In this study, 'turnning point' is defined as 'a event that makes family caregiver's coping pattern change through the time'. From analysis of 16 families' life histories, we got some findings. The significant findings are : (1) While nine families experienced 'turnning point', seven families didn't face any turnning points. (2) In nine families exprienced 'turnning point', while three families faced turnning points about the mentally ill such as 'institutionalism' and an attempted suicide, six families faced turnning points about the family such as getting social support, for example, an expert on the mental illnnes and self-help group. (3) In the stress studies, 'bad event' has a bad influence upon mental health. But in this study, 'bad event' became 'turnning point' which had a good influence upon family caregiver's perception and coping pattern through the time.
