Criris Intervention is a mode of short-term casework, focused on the person and his family in crisis. Crisis intervention based on crisis theory has been developed in the United States over the last decades. It is now gradually applied in social work, medical, and mental health settings in Japan. However, it is not wellformulated as a useful and effective helping method. The focusof this paper is to give an outline of crisis theory and crisis intervention in the changing American society so that we can apply them into practice in various settings. 1. Introduction of crisis intervention to Japan. 2. Diversity of techniques and settings in using crisis theory and crisis intervention in the United States. 3. Characteristics of crisis theory and crisis intervention. 4. Goals of crisis intervention. 5. Levels of crisis intervention and techniques- a distinction of problems treated by professionals, paraprofessionals and volunteers. Person in crisis has to be helped in affective, cognitive, and behavioral aspects, as well as social functioning. Goals of crisis intervention in social work has to be clarified in social functioning, and decision making in crisis situation has to de examined in relation to the worker's effective intervention.
