An air-breathing mechanism is proposed and examined in a plate-like PZT-based active guider in a modern, high capacity tape drive. Proximity between the guider and tape examined and validated through experimental measurements at several tape transport speeds. Increasing of contact area between the guider and traveling tape was observed which suggests better controllability of the guider in controlling traveling tape's lateral motion.
