This paper reports the effect of high external hydrostatic pressure on machining properties of hard brittle materials. The authors found that the critical depth of cut can be magnified by using high hydrostatic pressure. In this paper, a new machining tester is developed. The tester enables two dimensional machining test and in-situ observation under high hydrostatic pressure simultaneously. Using this equipment, two dimensional machining test of soda glass plates were conducted under various hydrostatic pressures. Based on the measured cutting forces, effects of external hydrostatic pressure to the machining mechanism of glass are studied.
