If sensor nodes cannot support multiple antennas due to size or power consumption, the use of collaborative (or cooperative) communications can greatly improve the performance over quasi-static wireless channels. In order to realize long-distance wireless communications with low power consumption, the combination of multi-hop transmission and collaborative communication is an attractive candidate. In this paper, various collaborative multi-hop transmissions are analyzed in terms of the outage probability. Based on the analyses, the design of collaborative multi-hop transmission is investigated.
