A preliminary issue of the error correcting mechanism for a two-dimensional barcode system is studied. To write down information on a paper is the most reliable way to record information over a very long period of time. Using a two-dimensional barcode is effective to increase the density of printed information, but barcodes with higher density will be more sensitive to the printing quality and possible soils over the barcode- image. One possible solution to this issue is to make use of powerful error correcting codes and soft-decision decoding. In this report, we study a basic property of the channel defined by a printer and a scanner, and discuss how to obtain good soft-values from the scanned image of a barcode whose cell size is very small.
