As the residual toxicities of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides, such as DDT, BHC and so on, to mankind have given rise to public controversy, urgent development researches of new insecticides replacing them are widely expected. Until recently, possible uses for organotin compounds had received little consideration as insect-proofing agents of timber, in spite of the fact that some of them were made out to be effective fungicides. During screening tests of numerous organotin compounds by the author, a series of organotin compounds containing tributyltin dithiocarbamate as an effective agent were found to have a high degree of rapid toxicity to insects. The tributyltin derivatives are as follows: Tributyltin-N, N-dimethyl dithiocarbamate (abbreviation TY-2001), Tributyltin-N,N-diethyl dithiocarbamate (TY-2002) and Tributyltin-N, N-dibutyl dithiocarbamate (TY-2005). In these tests such stored crop insects as the rice weevil, Sitophilus zeamais MOTSCHULSKY, and the adzuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis LlNNE, instead of wood products insects-termites and powder-post beetles, were used. The results of tests are presented in Table 1〜15. It is revealed that these derivatives have atomic groups acting as not only contact poison but respiration and stomach poison against insects. Their contact poison brings immediate death and stomach poison gives residual effects to insects. In addition, the compounds were appeard to be effective as insect chemosterilants, especially inhibiting the oviposition of females. And so, it could be said these organotin compounds are new faces of wood preservatives having both insecticidal and fungicidal activities.
