Since the 1970's plays of Edward Albee (1928- ) have been approaching allegorical plays more and more. In this connection we are reminded of All Over (1971), Seascape (1975), Counting the Ways (1976) and The Lady from Dubuque (1980). However, it seems also clear that one of the great themes that Albee has invariably pursued since The Zoo Story (1959), can be seen in them. In a certan interview he said, "I'll write how much people are wasting their own lives." In his plays he describes how human lives are profound and splendid by creating the two types of personages-'those who are wasting their own lives', and 'those who are leading active and worthy lives'. In 1953 he first met the famous American playwright Thornton Wilder, by whom he was given advice to commence the life of a playwright. Therefore, it is evident that he has been deeply influenced by Wilder. In this paper the present writer makes a research of what influence is given to him by Wilder, especially by Our Town, with which are compared Albee's three plays-All Over (1971), Who's Afreid of Virginia Woolf? (1962) and Seascape (1975).
