Elimination ability of volatiles in physical recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes by vacuum-extrusion apparatus and solid-state polymerization apparatus was investigated using headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry. In Japan, the former is included in most of domestic production lines for PET pellets or sheets made from the PET flakes, and the latter is included in a super-clean process to raise molecular weight of the PET flakes. Both were equipped with vaccum chambers operated at high temperature. For the vacuum-extrusion apparatus, contaminant-modeling tests were carried out with toluene and benzene as surrogates, contaminated at high concentration levels to the commercial recycled PET flakes. They were almost eliminated from the PET flakes by the operation of the apparatus. At the same time, limonene and ethanol remaining in the recycled PET flakes were also removed. Further, for the solid-state polymeriz-ation apparatus, the commercial recycled PET flakes including trace amounts of volatiles were used as testing samples. Most of volatiles were eliminated perfectly by the solid-state polymerization. The results indicate that both apparatus have enough elimination ability of volatiles in the physical recycled PET flakes, and the latter would have the higher ability than the former.
