Using headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, residual volatiles were analyzed in 1252 lots of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes made by the physical process from post-consumer PET beverage bottles in commercial recycling plants. Almost all the flake samples contained ethanol and limonene from beverage components, and also formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane by PET polymer degradation. Further, a little amount of benzene, toluene and xylene were firstly found in this research, and those are originated from small pieces of bottle labels, printing ink, adhesives, and tackifier into the washing process. In addition, a little amount of p-dichlorobenzene was unexpectedly found, and those were found to be originated from residual insecticides spread at deposit centers for post-consumer bottles. In this test method, comparing the total ion chromatogram (TIC) of a sample of recycled PET flakes with standard TIC, unusual volatile peaks can be found, and also may be estimated the approximate quantity. So, commercial recycled PET flakes may be evaluated by this test method before shipping from the recycling plants. If there is a doubtful peak in TIC of the sample flakes, the batch of flakes should not be used in contact with food. This method is useful to monitor volatiles in recycled PET flakes.
