This report presents a general method of reliability analysis on the fatigue strength of ship structures subjected to fluctuating wave loads under service conditions. The method is based on the demand-capability concept, where considered are the statistical distributions of random variables including still water stress due to cargo loading, the extreme value of the fluctuating wave stress, cumulative fatigue damage factor and fatigue strength characteristics of welded joints of the structural members. Sensitivity analysis is also made to insure the significance and accuracy of the results of the present analysis. Numerical calculations are then performed by using a computer programme, evaluating the fatigue failure probability of both longitudinal strength members and transverse members of a 240,000 DWT oil tanker.
