Extensive shielding studies for the first nuclear ship of Japan were performed in order to confirm the validity of basic design methods and to obtain useful experimental data for complicated problems in shielding. In the primary shield studies, the neutron and gamma-ray attenuations were measured with mockups placed in the pool of JRR-4, and the results were compared with calculations using several computer codes.Valuable information was obtained for the radiation distribution in the reactor code radial direction and oblique-upward direction as well as for the shielding effects of control rod structure. In the secondary shield studies, mockups of the shields of some typical configurations were placed in the dry test facility of JRR-4. Gamma-ray dose albedos and the backscattered neutron spectrum were measured, and the behaviour of gamma rays incident on shields having a duct, a hole or a slit was studied.
